Silvie Rider’s American debut Je Te Connais

Austin – Singer Silvie Rider recently released her American debut, Je Te Connais, at the Elephant Room in Austin, Texas.
The recording is already receiving praise such as “Silvie Rider’s American debut features the singer in fine form, full of enthusiasm and displaying her versatility and warmth…” from LA Jazz Scene’s Scott Yanow.

When pianist and arranger Red Young said he was interested in producing her music, she had little idea what a “Giant Step” she would be taking. The two met in Munich in 2006 while Young was touring with Eric Burdon. A year later the musical collaboration led to marriage, and a move for Rider from Munich to Austin where they are now based. Bringing things full circle, in 2009 Rider and Young performed at the Munich Jazz Festival.

The album includes two original songs, and is produced and arranged by Young. Recordings were done in Austin and Los Angeles. The album includes Young on piano, Chris Maresh on bass, Ephraim Owens on trumpet, Alex Coke on flute, Lon Price and Sam Lipman on saxophone, Eric McFadden on guitar, and J.J. Johnson on drums.

After so many years of classical training before discovering jazz, Rider says, “The improv of jazz gives you the next step from the evolutionary point of view.” With her merger of cultures and music styles, Rider hopes to bring some French and European flavor to her new homeland.

“Jazz gives me the opportunity to use everything I have – soul, intellect, spirit, and communicate with audience,” Rider says. “On this recording I hope to offer a special menu of eleven songs, that are different. I looked for diverse songs to enjoy and celebrate life. I feel my listeners are like my guests for a wonderful meal. And you don’t want to serve your guests what they can get at home.”

On I Love Paris Rider honors her French heritage and love of the city where she lived briefly in her twenties. Chosen for her appreciation of Cole Porter’s subtle insights, she delivers sensual phrasing with lyrics in English and French integrating the two cultures.

The original No Worry, No Hurry was written while living in Munich. A student of meditation and consciousness evolution, Rider finds inspiration from music, and the gap between the inhale and exhale serve her in the writing process.

Autumn Leaves was chosen for another nod to her goal of becoming European/American. Je Te Connais translates as “I know you” and touches on the deja vu feeling connected to reincarnation, and was written while visiting and recording in New York where she met people who seemed familiar. Every Time We Say Goodbye was included for its tenderness – now especially sentimental as dual musical careers have lots of goodbyes with touring.

Tomorrow Never Knows is a favorite of Rider’s because of the wisdom of the lyrics. My Foolish Heart is also a favorite for it’s beautiful lyrics. Wild is the Wind was chosen for it’s universal appeal, and is Rider’s favorite on the album.

Giant Steps is a tribute to John Coltrane whose work Rider studied at the Swiss Jazz School. Also a nod to the “Giant Step” she took to follow her heart to jazz years ago, and to the States more recently.

Once in Your Life had to be included since Betty Carter was an inspiration for Rider to begin studying jazz, and remains one of her favorite jazz singers.

Nature Boy is a tribute to her brother Maximillian who passed away a few years ago.

Silvie Rider Biography:

Born and raised in Switzerland, with family in France and Austria, Rider began playing piano at age six and writing her own songs soon after. She then studied classical piano lessons continuously. But at age 18, while in the States as an exchange student, Rider heard Betty Carter perform in Washington, D.C. She was so moved by the performance she then turned her focus to jazz.

Back in Switzerland Rider completed a teaching degree, and then began studying at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern. She studied with Fritz Pauer, the great composer and pianist from Vienna. At the same time she received her Swiss University Diploma in Sports and Pedagogy from the University of Bern. Since the Swiss Jazz School did not offer diplomas in vocal studies, Rider toured Germany with the student jazz band, and discovered the jazz scene in Munich.

Rider relocated to Munich where she recorded three albums, and performed with the Silvie Rider Art Duo. Performances included the Music University in Hamburg 1998 with Orchestra and television appearances. In 1999 and 2004 she performed at the Munich Jazz Festival with the Silvie Rider Band. In the 2004 her performance included Canadian contra bassist Rocky Knauer, the long time bassist for Chet Baker. Other career highlights include six months performing in Tokyo, and teaching at music schools, giving workshops and private lessons.

In 2007 Rider relocated to Austin with her new husband pianist Red Young.

Red Young:

Texas native producer, arranger, pianist Red Young’s career has included recording, touring, television shows and movies with a seemingly endless list of talent including Freddy Fender, Kinky Friedman, Noel Redding, Sonny & Cher, Eric Burdon, Joan Armatrading, Dolly Parton, Tanya Tucker, Linda Ronstadt/Nelson Riddle, Stephen Bruton, Juice Newton, Marcia Ball, Plas Johnson, Royal Crown Revue, Adam Levy, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. His own band, Red and the Red Hots, recorded four albums and toured heavily along with regular shows in the Los Angeles swing scene where he lived for 25 years. Young is currently touring with Eric Burdon and his own Group.
